The Atelier

A quiet atelier of mineral surfaces.

Concept: macro detail of hand-applied lime plaster

Sahara Surfaces is a Melbourne-based atelier devoted to the craft of Venetian plaster. We work in lime, marble dust and mineral pigment — materials with a lineage that reaches back to Morocco and forward to the most considered contemporary interiors.

Founded by a craftsman with over a decade of hands-on experience in traditional Venetian plaster, the practice brings both technical depth and a quiet, personal care to every commission.

Every surface is prepared and troweled by hand. We do not shortcut a curing time, we do not thin a plaster, and we do not deliver a wall we would not live with ourselves.

Our practice sits between craft and architecture. We work closely with architects, interior designers and private clients — beginning each project with the light of the room, the intent of the design, and the material that will do them both justice.

Materials

Lime, marble dust, pigment — nothing else.

  • Natural hydraulic and aged slaked lime, sourced from European producers.·
  • Marble dust of varying granulometries for depth and luminosity.·
  • Natural mineral pigments — no synthetic colourants.·
  • Mineral sealers and beeswax finishes only.·

Working with the atelier
